Every residence hall on campus has its own chapel. A photo essay. . .

Student life on campus is strongly connected with the residence halls. Each hall has its own chapel, each with its own characteristic architecture, music, and traditions.

Residence halls run on college student hours, and the same is true for the chapels. Masses are more likely to be at 10:00 p.m. than 10:00 a.m. “Sunday best” means “come as you are.” And hall chapels aren’t just for Sundays. Every chapel hosts at least one weeknight Mass along with Eucharistic adoration and other prayer services.

Most hall chapels are non-public spaces for residents, guests, and friends, so please enjoy this virtual tour of these chapels.

ALUMNI HALL

BADIN HALL

St. Stephen Chapel

The Badin Hall chapel was added to the west side of the building during major renovations in the 2017–18 academic year.

The stained glass windows were made in the early 20th century and were previously in a Chicago convent.

The exterior walls of the chapel were faced with the famous yellow Notre Dame bricks, reclaimed from their original use in the Drewrys Brewery in South Bend.

BREEN-PHILLIPS HALL

St. Francis of Assisi Chapel

The Breen-Phillips chapel was most recently updated in 2015, with new seating, flooring, and lighting, and a new altar.

CARROLL HALL

CAVANAUGH HALL

The Holy Spirit Chapel

Cavanaugh Hall was built in 1936 and named in honor of Rev. John W. Cavanaugh, C.S.C., president of Notre Dame from 1905 to 1919. It changed from a men’s to a women’s residence hall in 1994.

On the arch over the sanctuary is a relief of the symbol of the Holy Spirit flanked by two angels.

The chapel has a unique semi-circle orientation.

An annual Christmas tradition is the Lewis Lucenarium, a candlelight prayer service during Advent.

LYONS HALL

All Souls’ Chapel

The chapel is a unique barrel-vaulted space.

Lyons Hall was built in 1925, and the chapel was most recently renovated in 2014.

Lyons is one of three hall chapels not on a main floor, with ornate columns and stairs down into the space.

McGLINN HALL

St. Bridgit of Kildare Chapel

Chapel of Our Lady of the Visitation

The Walsh Hall chapel was renovated in 2012, getting a new floor, seating, and stained glass windows.
